Saturday 30 October 2010

We went to the Huntarian Museum with college to do drawing etc, its full of body parts and pickled things in jars. It was amazing/disgusting. Here are a few pages from my sketchbook.

  'Mr and Mrs Vinegar'

Stills from the Cabaret group project, and a poster I made for it.

This was the first proper project Camber's set us. We were put in groups of 6 and given an old story/folk tale from which to produce some sort of performance piece. My group got 'Mr and Mrs Vinegar', which as far as I'm aware isn't a classic. The others in my group made some fantastic masks, which really helped dictate the slightly unsettling/odd atmosphere of our film. We acted out our interpretaion and filmed it in advance, and it was brilliantly edited (not by me.) I'll put the video up later..

                                                 Floria Sigismondi 'Immune'
I found this image in a magazine and was immediately drawn to its otherworldly nature. For me this image is quite haunting; the mix of animal and human is slightly disconcerting, giving it a horror movie-ish quality. Also the movement gives the impression that the character is searching for something, peering out at you.

'The Burry Man'. Character from regional British folklore.

I found this photograph on The Museum of British Folklore's website. I love this image; it has a really eerie quality to it, but is also quite comical. The 'Burry Man' is the lead figure in a annual ritual of 'The Burryman's Parade' which takes place in South Queensferry, near Edinburgh. I am finding myself more and more drawn to imagery regarding folklore, customs, the darker side of human nature and the natural world.
